All TURKISH cymbals are made of a superior alloy created through a secret, time-honored "recipe" that has passed down through the centuries, from father to son. (Suffice it to say that copper and tin are the primary ingredients.) We buy all of our precious metals in bulk, and these are melted down carefully in order to extract the alloy. Unlike other major cymbal manufacturers, we never use ready-made discs! No short-cuts to quality! We know the importance of selecting raw materials by hand. Our Master Cymbal Smith is personally involved in the selection process from start to finish. Anything that fails to meet his impeccable standards is rejected.

TURKISH CYMBALS are always made from scratch, and this is part of the reason they not only sound great, but last forever! Our Master Cymbal Smith uses old-world wisdom, combined with cutting-edge technology, to determine whether or not a batch of copper or tin is pure enough to grace the molds in our ovens. And this guarantee is what allows you, the customer, to feel confident that every time you purchase a TURKISH cymbal, you are getting precisely what you pay for: The right materials needed to achieve a perfect balance of softness and thickness.

Because no matter how expertly a cymbal is formed and finished-it must come from the right metal, or it does not deserve to be called TURKISH! That's why we can say with confidence, "Test your metal on ours!"TM

Traditional Istanbul-made cymbals are 100% handcrafted.
The process of manufacturing includes handhammering, handshaping, handlathing & handpolishing.
That's why our TURKISH cymbals exhibit a wider range of sounds than any of their counterparts in the rest of the world. Nothing else even comes close.

SHORT CYMBALOGY

The sound of any cymbal is really a number of sounds that ring together to form its overall sonic characteristics. If you listen to a cymbal closely (played softly) you will hear a fundamental tone and a few over-tones, or partials.  These over-tones may occur at many different frequencies--from a low, slowly developing warm hum, to a fast, bright high-pitched shattering, with a number of tones in between. The harder you hit a cymbal, the more high-pitched over-tones you will hear. When a cymbal is called "dark", it has dominant lower tones.  When a cymbal is called "bright", it has lots of high frequencies, and more "cut", which means it can cut through the music with a piercing, penetrating sound. A heavy cymbal is louder, and requires more time and energy to resonate and crash. A lighter, thinner cymbal will react more nimbly. It will still cut and crash quickly, with less effort, but it also has less sustainability, and decays faster than a thicker cymbal.

Size matters . . . or does it? You might think that the larger the cymbal, the lower the pitch, and this is sometimes true, but you can't always count on it. The pitch of a cymbal can also be determined by the height of the bell--that is, if you lay the cymbal flat on the ground, the height is measured in relative distance between the top of the bell from the floor. The higher the bell, the higher the pitch. Larger cymbals tend to resonate longer. Take a 20" ride cymbal for example. The ping and crash might be higher pitched than a 16" medium crash, and an 18" crash might be even higher in pitch, yet ring for a long time.

Cymbal sounds are described as being "glassy", "trashy", "complex", "raw", "dry", "explosive", "fast", "exotic", "wide", "delicate", "splashy", "silvery", "woody", "breathy", "washy", "clean", "dirty", "buttery" and finally, "eccentric"...
